Dreams from the Past

Author: Robyn

It had been a long day. The twinges and pain in her side persistant even after the medication. She knew she had over done things but she wanted to things moving smoothly in the P&P. Laying down intending to just rest for a bit letting the medication do its work she drifted off into a troubled sleep. Twisting on the futon...her mind moving like a movie on a screen. Images swirling....flickering through her subconscious mind.

The sound of gunfire rebounding off the walls as the screams of the children rose in volume. Ducking behind the water fountain looking at the other officers as they slowly made their way up the hall, using the cover of the screams to muffle their footsteps. Her flack vest in place and the polic helmet covering her head didn't drown out the sound of gunfire and the screams of the kids as they neared the classroom. Looking at the other two officers and their pale faces she was sure hers was as white as theirs...her stomach lurched as another scream came from inside the classroom and a gruff voice yelled for them to shut up. Swallowing hard and nodding to the others she stood and with a sudden jump..tucked and rolled past the classroom door as a burage of bullets hit the door frame and wall. Laying low until they stopped before belly crawling closer to the door, the sweat dripping from her chin. She could hear the sound of it hitting the floor as if it had been magnified a hundred times.

Wiping the back of her hand over her wet face as she nodded to the three across the doorway. Without warning three shots rang out in the room and the children started screaming again. Thuds could be heard and her heart rammed up into her throat as she jumped up and dove through the open doorway rolling until she was in a crouch aiming the gun in the direction of the shots. Two other officers came flying through the door as she screamed looking for the gunmen..." Boston PD... release the children and give yourselves up now...." shots rang out as she finished and the children began screaming as the barrage continued. She readied her weapon...looking into the tearstreaked face of a blonde boy shaking and being held against a man holding a 9mm to his head.

"Go ahead ...shoot and he dies..." the mans hand twitched as the other officers opened fire on the other gunmen who had made a break for the other door. His finger tightened on the trigger and she had only a split second to make a choice. Her eyes meet the terror filled eyes of the little boy just before she expelled her breath and squeezed off a single round into the chest of the gunman.

As the man jerked from the impact of the bullet blast his finger tightened on the trigger.....lunging forward almost in slow motion as she screamed...dropping her weapon and grabbed for his hand ....*click*.....the sound echoed in her ears as her hand closed around his wrist...and the boy collapsed to the floor. "Noooooooooooo....." her scream echoing through the room..as the man crumpled to the floor his wrist held tightly in her hand.

Closing her eyes as she fell to the floor atop the boy her breath caught in her throat...as a tiny voice beneath her whispers..." I wet my pants ...." Her muffled curse accompanied by a choked laugh..."Its okay honey...so did I.."

Letting out a loud scream before waking with a start...sweat pouring down her face as she struggled to sit up..."Wrong...wrong ... kids don't die like that. Good cops don't get killed ... babies don't fall with holes in their tiny heads and their faces blown off....NO..it doesn't happen...it doesn't..." pounding her fists into the pillow as her anger and rage build in her chest.
