Explosion Closes Amoskeag St. Bridge

Manchester (AP) -- Near midnight on July 30, a massive car bomb explosion rocked Downtown Manchester as a car exploded in the middle of Amoskeag Street Bridge. The occupants were killed instantly, and twelve others were injured in related car accidents. There were no other fatalities.

Immediately beforehand, according to police reports, the two victims--Jesse Dennison, 23, of Austin Texas, and an unidentified companion--left the Black Squirrel Tavern. After an argument with other unidentified assailants, they ran from the alley next to the tavern to their car. Moments later, as they were driving over the bridge, their car exploded. The car, a 1992 Celica with Virginia plates, could not be traced to an owner.

Forensic experts have concluded that foul play was definitely involved. Morris Wheatley, the head of the forensic investigation, told reporters at a press conference this morning that white phosphorus was used as an accelerant, probably in the form of a bomb placed beneath the car. Evidence of a remote-control device was located in the wreckage, but no control box has been located. The police are treating the case as a homicide, and releasing no details about the specifics under investigation.
