Pen Pals

Author: Diana

A letter received in Manchester, New Hampshire on 12 March 2009 (The envelope and stationery are matching: the violets around margins are the same color as the lavender envelope. A sticker of an African violet seals it.)

Dearest Beatrice,

It's so hard to remember to call you that instead of "Buffy." But that's because I used to know another Buffy here in Detroit when I was growing up. She was always the sweetest girl.

Well, it sounds like everything in Manchester is a long story. But we both kind of knew that, didn't we? I am dismayed to hear about how some of them are ending--D. and G. always somewhat worried me, and now my grandmotherly suspicions are confirmed. I'm glad R. is with you, or else I would think that every male around you had gone bonkers.

It's good to hear that you're gaining something from your classes. I went to a few classes at Williams Sonoma last summer. Most of the recipes were just Frenchified nonsense, but I will be sure to send you the pork loin recipe. (Are you eating meat yet? You really could use that protein, you know. If you're not, I'm sure R. might like the loin. If you cook it just right, it's very succulent.)

I am very sorry to hear about your mother. Losing somone that close is always a terrible shock. But you and I are close enough to know that there is always a way to begin again. Endings must come, but they do not have to have the last word.

I have been saving some good news for last. The shelter in Manchester has asked me to come do some work for them later on this month. I will be out there for about three full weeks! I am positively delighted. I have heard that several storms have gone through lately, but as long as the snow isn't grey like it is here in Detroit, I will be happy.

My best to R. Also try out the recipe for popovers included below. I found it quite satisfying, and I thought of you when I made them.

Love,
Diana
